Packing your hospital bag is one of those jobs that feels big until you break it down. Here is a simple checklist for families delivering in Dubai and across the UAE, split into what baby needs, what you need and the paperwork you shouldn't forget.
Every hospital is different, so check your hospital's own list too – some provide nappies, wipes or baby clothes and some don't.
When should I pack my hospital bag?
Many mums aim to have their bag ready by around 36 weeks, or earlier if your doctor has advised you that baby may arrive early. Keep it by the door or in the car so it's ready to go.
For baby
- 5–6 everyday outfits in newborn or 0–3 month sizes – jablas, jumpsuits or co-ord sets are easy to change
- 2–3 swaddles or light blankets – hospitals are air-conditioned, so a breathable layer is useful
- Cap, socks and mittens
- Muslin cloths or burp cloths for feeds and little spills
- Bibs and a few soft wash cloths or reusable wipes
- A going-home outfit – pick something you'll love in the first photos
- Car seat fitted in the car before you go
For mum
- A comfortable nursing-friendly dress or night set with easy feeding access
- Loose, comfortable clothes for going home
- Nursing bras and breast pads
- Toiletries, lip balm and a hair tie
- Slippers and warm socks – hospital floors and AC can be cold
- A long phone charger and snacks
Paperwork for UAE hospitals
- Passports and Emirates IDs for both parents
- Marriage certificate
- Health insurance card and any pre-registration documents from your hospital
Check with your hospital which documents they need for registration and for the birth certificate, as requirements can vary.
