What Should a Newborn Wear in UAE Heat?

Dressing a newborn in the UAE can feel tricky – it's hot outside, chilly in the mall and somewhere in between at home. These simple tips will help keep your little one comfortable.

Every baby is different. If you're worried about your baby's temperature, speak to your paediatrician.

1. Choose breathable fabrics

Light, breathable fabrics such as muslin let air move and help prevent babies from getting sweaty. Avoid heavy synthetic fabrics on hot days.

2. Think in light layers

A common guide is to dress your baby in about one more light layer than you're comfortable in. In practice that might be:

  • Outdoors on a hot day: a single light layer such as a sleeveless muslin jabla and a nappy, with shade and a sun hat.
  • Indoors with AC: a light outfit plus a thin muslin blanket you can add or remove.
  • Malls and cars: keep a light blanket or full-length jumpsuit handy for cold air conditioning.

3. Check your baby, not the thermostat

Feel the back of your baby's neck or tummy. If it's sweaty, remove a layer; if it feels cool, add one. Hands and feet often feel cooler, so they aren't the best guide.

4. Dress for easy changes

Newborns need lots of changes. Front-opening jablas, button frocks and tie nappies make quick changes easier – especially at night.

5. Pack a spare outfit

For days out, keep a spare outfit, a muslin cloth and a light blanket in your bag. Our bags & little extras are handy for this.
